The Backpage Term 3 Week 10

Saturday’s AAGPS Athletics carnival marked the end to the 2018 sports year, the 125th for our College. The year possessed triumphs and heartbreaking defeats, but will always be remembered for it’s remarkable finish as our Athletics team, in a display of true Scots courage, won our first Premiership in Athletics since 1975. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our entire sports department. We are fortunate to have a tremendous sports admin team, team of Directors and Coordinators in each sport, and coaching staff who are devoted to ensuring that every boy at Scots is challenged to strive for their best. Thomas Yassmin joins UTAH

THOMAS Yassmin has still never played a game of American football in his life. He put on a helmet for the first time over the weekend. It felt “weird”; the 18-year-old had never even worn a cricket helmet, let alone the football equivalent he put over his head while in Salt Lake City. Yassmin’s foremost athletic experience came in the form of rugby, with the product of The Scots College earning a spot in the Australian Schoolboys team, dominating the wing with his impressive combination of size and speed. He was also a member of his school’s firsts basketball team, with his main exposure to football coming from what he saw on television, and video games. Still, despite having as little actual interaction with football as one could get, Yassmin’s future looks as bright as ever. He’s now a tight end, just signed to the University of Utah. Read more...

SNOWSPORTS 2016

Matthew Wright and David Patterson performed well in the Victorian Biathlon Championships. Matthew won both his races and David came away with a gold and a silver medal. David is fairly new to the sport but he is very enthusiastic about its complexity. According to David “Biathlon is a mix of two sports, target shooting and cross country skiing where the competitors cross country ski five laps of a set course and in between each lap the competitors shoot five rounds (bullets) at five separate targets. I raced in a sprint and also a longer distance race. I did better in the sprint and realized that I have to do some more fitness training.” Matthew needs to have one more good result and he will be selected in the Australian Biathlon Team. What Sport Can Teach Your Kids About Life

It was Aristotle who said, “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Sport has the power to be transformative in a child’s life. Psychologists Salvatore Maddi and Suzanne Kobasa coined the term ‘psychological hardiness’. Their research affirmed that individuals, who have a strong sense of commitment to a task, saw that they had control over their environment and outcomes and saw any obstacles as a challenge were most likely to succeed. I have always had a cheerful disposition. Known to many as Cheeky Charlie, Chuckles, Chucky, I laugh readily and tend to find fun around every corner. However, there was a time in my life when it was pretty hard to be positive. Close to 7 years ago I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Scots Tennis Season Summary

The 2015/16 AAGPS Tennis Championships in so many ways has been a defining one. This season saw many of our young players take to the court and experience the team culture now an instrumental component of the Scots Tennis framework. Through the entire AAGPS 14 round competition (7 trial rounds and 7 main rounds) Scots Tennis remained undefeated against all schools. Throughout the season, Scots played 280 matches, with 180 wins, 51 losses and 29 draws at an overall winning average of 78.37%. CRICKET REPORT

2015/16 was another great season for the Scots Cricket Program. Our juniors sides have again been outstanding, starting the season with a successful tour of Tamworth and took this form into the season proper. Our under 15's continued to be a strong side both before and after Glengary. Our under 14's as a group won over 75% of their matches and our new year 7's have made a successful transition from prep to senior school cricket. This season, we put out more senior cricket teams than at any other stage in the past 5 seasons. Fielding 1st through to 5ths and 2 under 16's team shows how strong cricket at Scots College has become. All of these teams achieved good success this season and should be applauded for their efforts. Read more...

TABLE TENNIS REPORT

Many people would call it “Ping pong” and consider it a recreational social activity but the sport of Table Tennis at the Scots College is a highly skilled, fast paced and tactically challenging Summer Sport. Where players smash the ball at over 100km per hour and spin the serve so acutely that it turns 90’ our players sweated their way through in the pilot year of the invitational table tennis competition. The 2015/2016 Summer Table Tennis Squad at the Scots College had an outstanding season. Lead capably by our Captain Jackson Lister our 23 man squad played a full round of fixtures against Waverley College, Knox Grammar School, The Kings School, Newington College, St Ignatius College and Sydney Boys High School. Woollahra Sailing Club renowned for nurturing top talent including a strong record of Olympians

FUTURE STAR IN the early days of his young sailing career, John Cooley admits he very nearly gave it all away. As a 10-year-old he watched other kids who had developed into promising sailors and thought there was no way he could peg them back and reach their level. But after some encouragement from family and teachers at Scots College John stayed the course and now finds himself eyeing a chance to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympics. To mark his steady rise John, 16, has been named the Wentworth Courier’s 2015 Junior Sports Star. He earned the nomination after a series of big performances on the world stage alongside crewmate Simon Hoffman, including second place at the Australian 29er Nationals, second at the European Cup and sixth at the World Youth Championships. Proving it was no fluke he won the national youth and Australian championships in January, making him a leading candidate for a spot on the team heading to Oman for the world championships later this year. THE BACKPAGE #3

The Scots College exists to inspire boys to learn, lead and serve as they strive for "excellence" together. One of my favourite debates in Sport is the difference between "excellence" and "winning". We can all think of examples, like Lance Armstrong for example, where someone has won but we can hardly define them or their performance as excellent. Aristotle said "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." I tend to agree with this viewpoint of excellence, winning is more about our repeated daily habits than just the total points on the board on the weekend.    At Scots, Sport is an integrated learning pathway. Sport can be used as a powerful tool to teach boys that the habits they develop in training will ultimately lead to success on the sporting Read more...
