The Backpage Term 4 Week 7

Heading into our final Saturday of sport for 2018,  I want to say thank you to everyone in the Scots Sport community.  2018 has been a great year, with some excellent results and some very big improvements.  A reminder to all parents and boys that there is an extensive holiday program running at Scots across all of our summer sports.  Throughout the holidays our Mind Body Heart program will be running, including gym and speed sessions. Historically the boys who have committed the most to their summer training have seen the biggest improvements and overall success in term one.

Congratulations to our Director of Volleyball and our beach teams who competed for the first time ever on Friday at the NSW Schools Beach Championships, with Scots finishing fourth overall.

Well done to our Athletics teams who competed at the NSW Relays Championships over the weekend.  Scots is one of just a few schools competing in this club championships and should be very proud of taking home the bronze medal in the U18 4x100m against some of the biggest clubs in NSW.

Great results for Waterpolo with wins against St.Aloysius, who lead the CAS competition this season.  This puts Scots as the leaders in the combined GPS/CAS competition going into the break.

I would like to highlight an outstanding effort from our Swimmers who competed in the first-ever term four GPS competition.  A big thank you as well to Ms. Ferguson who was instrumental in getting this competition up and running.

This Saturday will be the first big test for our Tennis teams, taking on Sydney Boys High in both the 1st and 2nd grade final of the GPS plate competition.  Both Scots' and High's 1sts and 2nds teams are undefeated this season. Good luck!

Good luck to our Basketball teams who depart next week to compete at the National Championships in Melbourne and to our Water Polo teams who will compete the following week at the Trans-Tasman competition.

And finally, a giant congrats to our very own Ben Sawyer, Director of Cricket, who adds a world cup victory to his credentials after coaching the women's T20 team to a win over England in the final.

Good luck to all of our teams this Saturday.

Scots to the Fore!

Mr Graham Pattison
Director of Sport

From Mr Ed White, Senior Sportsmaster

Last weekend we took on King’s and Sydney Boys High in Basketball, Cricket and Tennis. Then we played Water Polo against St Aloysius and Volleyball against Trinity.

Well done to the Water Polo team who had good results against St Aloysius. The 1sts and 2nds having continued success with 8-7 and 5-3 wins respectively. A big win to the 15's with a 16-3 victory.

Basketball had some close results with games against King’s. The 1sts going down in a tight game by 85-81. The 2nds winning from start to finish by 62-42. Some really good wins to the lower opens. Another good win to our 16A's who continue to impress each week, they won by 55-28. Looking forward to the rest of their cohort joining them again next term from Glengarry.

In Cricket we played Sydney Boys High in most games. The 1st XI bowling High out for 226 and in reply are 1 for 63. The 2nd XI had a tougher day at McKay with High making 9/265. Well done to the 15A team who bowled High out for 102 and then in reply are 7/139.

Tennis came up against Kings and once again some great results across the fixture. The 1sts and 2nds both winning by the same margin 8-1. The lower opens were the pick of the rest with wins in 4ths to 8ths.

Volleyball had tough results vs Trinity going down in all matches.

This weekend is the last fixture for the year and we take on High in Cricket, Basketball and Tennis. Our Tennis 1sts and 2nds playing High for the preseason GPS plate competition.

From Mr Daniel Markham, Director of The Mind Body Heart Pathway and Head of PDHPE

The new John Solomon gym upgrade is fast approaching and scheduled to occur during camps week. This is an exciting time for the MBH program and will improve the facility allowing better processing capacity for our athletes. During this time not all sessions will be available, however a modified offering will still continue to run allowing all students to continue with their physical progress. Further details will be communicated with students and details will also be available on the MBH schoolbox page.

The final round of MBH testing was a success this week with some fantastic improvements and some exceptional results across the year groups. The results will be uploaded to the MBH dashboard and available for student review within a week. This is an important part of the MBH process and allows students to make better decisions and engage with the session types that will yield the greatest results.

As always we would encourage all students to take advantage of the holiday MBH sessions and continue making progress during this time. It will make a significant difference in performance in term 1 next year. Details regarding holiday training are below:

WHAT: S&C sessions and SPEED sessions

WHEN: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6.30am-8am S&C and 8am-9.30am SPEED

WHERE: John Solomon Gym-S&C and Oval-SPEED

WHO: All students years 7-12

WHAT TO BRING: PE training kit, Towel, Drink bottle.

As always come and get “the STRONG advantage!”

Stories of the Week

Story 1 - Volleyball NSW Schools Beach Cup

Despite the windy and humid conditions at Manly Beach on Friday last week, the College was represented by 10 fine young Scotsmen in the NSW Volleyball Schools Beach Cup. 58 teams took part from NSW at the Schools Beach Cup.

The Division 2 competition which had 3 man teams was represented by two Scots teams consisting of Billy Evans (year 8),  Harry Hawksley (year 8), Paddy Ferguson (year 8), Ronnie Wilson (year 11), Luke Clark (year 9) and Charlie Lawand (year 10). The year 8 side had finished in 2nd place in their pool and finished the day in 6th overall, with the most impressive for and against winning some matches by 50 points. Our other team coached by Oscar Lawand finished on top of their pool and were narrowly defeated in the semi finals and then the bronze medal match. To be ranked 4 in Division 2. An impressive effort to be ranked in the top 4 school teams in NSW.

In Division 1 our College was represented by Zach Lenior (year 10), Angus Henricks (year 10), Tyler Egan (year 11) and James Dryden (year 11) in the elite program.

Tyler and James were in a tough pool where they finished 3rd and finished the day in 8th place overall.

Zach and Angus finished 1st in their pool and then had a 2-point loss in the medal round and with windy conditions the pair were just edged out in the bronze medal match to be the 4th placed school team in NSW. The year 10 pair were wonderful ambassadors for Scots and Beach Volleyball and backed up their performance from the recent Manly Beach Cup where they won a bronze medal in the Open division.

This was a wonderful achievement and is testament to their adaptability and resilience. Special thanks must extend to coaches, Tim Hill, Simon Johnson and Oscar Lawand who did a tremendous job. It is with hope that we will again be invited to compete in further championships and to be ranked top 4 in both divisions is a truly wonderful achievement.

Ms Claudia Brin, Coordinator of Volleyball

Story 2 - Ben Sawyer - World Cup win with Women’s Cricket Team

The big sporting news of the week was Australian Assistant Coach Ben Sawyer (and The Scots College Director of Cricket) winning the World Cup in Antigua. Ben has been with the Women's T20 team training for a few months and this was the icing on the cake for all the hard work the team has been doing. England batted first and were always behind in the game losing wickets at key moments. They could only muster 105 runs which was always going to be hard to defend given the Australia's fantastic batting line up. The Australians led by Meg Lanning scored the runs in the 15th over with only 2 wickets down.

Ben now returns to Sydney hoping to defend last year's Women's Big Bash title with the Sydney Sixers.

Congratulations Ben!

Story 3 - NSW Athletics Championships

Last weekend was the NSW Relay Athletics Championships at SOPAC, where we had three teams competing in the U18 4x100m and three teams competing in U18 4x400m. It has been one of the strongest summer athletics teams we have had for several years, which is super for the sport, especially after the success of term 3.

All the boys performed fabulously, with Jack Ricci, Hamish Dunstan, Hamish Lindstrom and Jack Mossman coming away with a Bronze medal in the U18 4x100m final, which was a great result, as this was the first time this team had run together and had very limited relay training.

With boys who were also technically U16 competing against some of the best clubs in the state at U18 age group, the boys didn’t look out of place and produced some solid performances that provides the College a bright future in the sport

Mr Matthew Williams, Director of Athletics & Cross Country
