Following a holiday break focussed on providing our boys with the best opportunities to develop as athletes, it is no surprise that our teams had a lot of success in our first week of competition this term.

In her book Grit, Angela Duckworth states: "As much as talent counts, effort counts twice." Our Staff and boys are proving this by placing an emphasis on work ethic and excellence in preparation, and as a result our teams are competing well. With only three weeks remaining in the Winter Sport season, four teams are still in contention for AAGPS Premierships. Best of luck in the coming weeks to the 1st and 2nd XV Rugby, 2nd XI Football and Open Cross Country teams.

The Rifle Shooting team followed on from their success at the NSW All Schools Championship with a strong showing at the AAGPS Shooting Championship last week. Entering the second day of competition in fifth position, the team made a remarkable comeback to finish second overall, winning the Buchanan Shield. Congratulations to Cameron Wallace who was selected as the Captain of the GPS team and to Clancy Reynolds, Hamish Grogan and Axel Melkonin who were also selected as part of the ten man squad.

Only two weeks to go until Back to Scots Weekend, where we will be hosting a big Rugby match against Joey's on the Main Oval. We look forward to seeing you all there.

This weekend sees some important clashes for our teams. Rugby take on Newington away, Football versus Grammar away, Volleyball against Grammar at home, and our Cross Country teams race against second-placed Sydney Boys High on their home ground.

Senior Sport

From Ed White, Senior Sportsmaster
It was a great Saturday of Sport for our teams. Thanks to all involved for your efforts over the holidays to ensure that our teams were prepared.

Rifle Shooting had a successful week, coming from behind to place second overall in the AAGPS Shooting Championship. Congratulations to Phil Cooney and his team, and good luck to the four boys who gained selection to the AAGPS Rifle Shooting team.

Great results across our Rugby program at home agains King's. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th XV were all victorious, keeping our 1st and 2nd teams on the top of the table and in the hunt for Premierships.

A special mention must go to the 13A team, who had a rematch with a particularly strong King's side. Having previously lost to this same opposition in the first round of the season, the team had a great match on Saturday, coming away with a hard-fought draw.

Cross Country and Athletics
Cross Country competed at the King's Relays Championship. Congratulations to our Intermediate team of Lachlan Irving, Max Freer, Ryan Lui and Harrison Jones who ran strongly to win the competition.

Our Volleyball teams played very well against Sydney Boys High. The strength once again was in the lower years of the program where our Under 14 teams had great matches.

Good results for our Football teams this weekend. Our 2nd and 3rd XI both had strong wins against Shore, with our Opens team going down in a thrilling 1-0 match. The teams match up against Grammar this Saturday with the 2nd XI looking to keep their Premiership hopes alive.

Prep Sport
From Brent Wilsmore (Prep Sportsmaster)
Excellent results after the break. The boys had a successful Queensland tour, with the Football team going undefeated and the Rugby team losing only once.

In Rugby, our Under 9 and 10 teams had good wins against Cranbrook to remain undefeated. Although they were missing a number of players, our Open 3rd Rugby team recorded a great win against Barker's 2nd team. Our Year 4 Football program was also outstanding with wins for all teams.

This Saturday we take on Waverley. Good luck to all of our teams.

Back to Scots Weekend
The annual Old Boys' Back to Scots Weekend is nearing. Running across three days, the weekend culminates in a Gala Day on Saturday 6 August for the traditional Rugby 1st and 2nd XV matches against Joey's. The day commences from 12:15pm.
The Annual Dinner will be held Friday 5 August at the Lang Walker Business Centre, and a Chapel service will be conducted from 9:30am on Sunday.
Any of our teaching staff who taught the latter years may want to reunite and reconnect with their ex-students, so we encourage you to come along.
All enquiries can be made to the Alumni Office. Please contact Veronica Green or Alison Kinge on or ext. 7606. The Alumni Office is located in Room O302, adjacent to The Founders' Room and Dining Room.
