The 1st XV squad toured South Africa over Easter as part of preseason preparations. The tour began in Cape Town, then ventured on a short safari in Pilanesburg Game Reserve before competing at the prestigious St. John’s Festival in Johannesburg. Scots started the festival with a bang, by beating Pretoria Boys High in the the first game, and then backing up the impressive performance with a comprehensive victory over hosts St. John’s College. The third game v Jeppe on the last day of the tour, proved too physical an encounter, leaving the squad under no illusions about the work needed ahead to ensure a successful GPS campaign. It should be noted that the highlights of the tour were more off the field than on it, with visits to Langa Township, Orlando Children’s Home, Soweto, and Nkosi’s Haven, which has left lasting impressions, and strengthened our desire to work harder on and off the field.
