Over the July holidays the Opens football took a squad of 16 players to compete in the Southern Skies U18 Football Tournament – a competition which attracts teams from across Australia and the Pacific region.
The boys found themselves in a tough opening round draw amongst teams including Barker, St Pius, last year’s winners St Peter Claver from Queensland and the New Calendonian Youth Team. The boys managed to negotiate their group games and progressed into the semis – beating St Pius 4 – 2 in a nail biting penalty shoot out.
Scots faced the New Caledonian Youth Team in the final, who had yet to concede a goal and had won all their games up to this point. Unfortunately, Scots couldn’t knock the New Caledonians off their stride – but turned in an outstanding defensive display to counter their movement, speed and agility. Scots conceded a goal early in the second half and New Caledonia ran out winners 1 – 0.
The boys put in a massive effort over the 4 day tournament and showed sings of progress heading into the GPS season. Mentions should go to Rocky Lagudi, Ed Goodall, Jerry Yu and Dominic Cooper (Year 10) for dominant midfield and defensive displays against older and more experienced opposition, Michael Rogerson, Will Cooper and James Page for their roles in leading the team, Dom Riordan who scored 3 goals and the two keepers Peter Groenlund and Nick Bouhoustos who pulled off a string of stunning saves.
Congratulations to all boys involved – a great result for Scots Football.
