Early Learning Sports

ELC Tennis

We hit the ground running in ELC sport in term 1, 2013. Day 1 of class and boys from Cubs to Year 1 began a comprehensive fundamental movement skills program in PE classes. Learning to walk, run, hop, skip and side-step sounds pretty basic, but we know with great technique comes great sportsmen and success in sport. Senior boys from Year 10 also joined in teaching some Year 1 some new games, and enjoyed spending time with their younger peers.

Boys in Kindergarten and Year 1 had the opportunity to enroll in Scots Extra Activities (SEA) sport after school. 117 boys, that is more than 80% of boys from K-1, took up the opportunity for extra summer sport sessions in cricket, tennis and basketball. Coached by professional and qualified staff, fun was key as technique, modified games and fitness became the focus of our afternoon sessions.

Camps in the school holidays for ELC and Prep boys continue the momentum of sport development here at Scots. ELC boys were invited to attend specialised camps in cricket and basketball over summer, as well as the annual ELC “Summer Fun Camp” touching on a number of water sports and activities to keep little ones active.

Term 2 and 3 will see winter sports such as tag rugby and football (soccer) on offer and these are always well attended. Tennis is on offer year round, and for the first time a morning “fitness” session will be available for some early morning energy expenditure. Our best coaches who are also involved in senior school coaching will tailor sessions for our youngest and keenest sports stars of the future.

Transition Lions will experience their first SEA sport sessions from term 2 onwards with tennis and ball sports- a combination of rugby, soccer and general ball skills.

The popular AFL program, “Auskick” will be coming to Scots for all K-2 boys in term 2. Boys will learn the basic skills of an AFL game including handballing, kicking and marking. These are of course transferable to many other sports and give Scots boys yet another opportunity to develop basic skills and techniques to serve them well across the Prep.

As you can see we hit the ground running, and keep on running here at the ELC!
