The Backpage Term 4 Week 7

Heading into our final Saturday of sport for 2018, I want to say thank you to everyone in the Scots Sport community. 2018 has been a great year, with some excellent results and some very big improvements. A reminder to all parents and boys that there is an extensive holiday program running at Scots across all of our summer sports. Throughout the holidays our Mind Body Heart program will be running, including gym and speed sessions. Historically the boys who have committed the most to their summer training have seen the biggest improvements and overall success in term one. Read more...

There is no denying that school sport is becoming increasingly competitive. In order for boys to compete at the highest levels of GPS and junior sport, the required commitment is substantial. Often, boys are being pulled in multiple directions, with expectations imposed on them from different sources. These expectations, often causing stress as a boy tries to manage all areas of his life. “The wood...taught us about survival, about overcoming difficulty, about prevailing over adversity, but it also taught us something about the underlying reason for surviving in the first place. Something about infinite beauty, about undying grace, about things larger and greater than ourselves. About the reasons we were all here.” A quote from Daniel James Brown’s, The Boys in the Boat, that encapsulates perfectly the reason why sport is so important in the development of young men. One the aspects of high school sport that I find most rewarding and challenging is working with students who are struggling with motivation. Often times when a student will meet with me to discuss that they are not happy or no longer motivated to train, what evolves in the meeting is a conversation about their general unhappiness or lack of motivation across all areas of their life. Alarmingly, these conversations happen frequently with boys in this age group and I suspect that for every boy who has the courage to speak up, there are many others that quietly go about their days saying nothing at all. I had the opportunity to watch a unique NBA game this week between the Golden State Warriors and the Chicago Bulls. As I often do, when watching sport, I analyse the sportsmanship and culture of the individuals and teams that I’m watching. This was a unique match in that the Golden State Warriors guard, Klay Thompson, broke the NBA record for most 3-point shots in a game. What was interesting, aside from watching a tremendous performance, was that he was breaking the record of his fellow teammate, Stephen Curry. Read more...

One of my favourite coaches of all time is the American basketball coach, John Wooden. Wooden, who was a spiritual man, developed a philosophy of coaching that centred around first and foremost developing fine young men and secondly great basketball players. Central to Wooden’s coaching style was his belief in focusing on process over outcome and teaching players and his coaching staff to set incredibly high standards for themselves and then to judge their success by whether or not they had reached their standard, not whether or not they had won or lost. There is a famous story where after winning a national championship it is fabled that he scolded the team who had just won because they had not reached the standard that they had set for themselves offensively, defensively and in number of turnovers. Saturday’s AAGPS Athletics carnival marked the end to the 2018 sports year, the 125th for our College. The year possessed triumphs and heartbreaking defeats, but will always be remembered for it’s remarkable finish as our Athletics team, in a display of true Scots courage, won our first Premiership in Athletics since 1975. The Backpage Term 3 Week 8

This past Sunday I took my 6-year-old son to get his hair cut. As I was sitting waiting for him I picked up a copy of an old ruffled Men’s Health magazine. In it, was an article titled, simply, “What does it mean to be a man?” After reading the article, I was left with a sense that the author clearly didn’t know the answer to his own question. We live in a time where the definition and traditional values of masculinity are constantly being challenged by the media. Because of this, a great boys school plays a very significant influence in teaching boys this lesson. When you ask most boys what it means to be a man, the usual answers revolve around wealth, athletic prowess and attractiveness to the opposite sex. At Scots we believe that the ultimate aim of our education is to help students acquire a knowledge Read more...

When I first started teaching and coaching I read a lot of biographies of some of the best coaches in the world. What struck me about all of these books was the common traits amongst the coaches. On the surface level, the first thing that you recognise is extreme levels of intensity and passion, but when you dig deeper you start to pick up some common philosophies. A large number of professional coaches from varying sports discussed their interest in Greek philosophy and the most common philosophy mentioned was that of the Stoics and in particular the philosophy outlined by Seneca the Younger in his Moral letters to Lucifius. This morning I had the opportunity to visit the 105 boys from our Senior School Athletics team who are away this week on the Athletics camp at Narrabeen. When I arrived, the boys were split into 3 conference rooms where they were being supervised on a 2 hour study block. This camp has been a highlight for the Athletics boys for the best 6 years and is a key component of preparing our boys to achieve their best at the upcoming GPS Championships. I have always been a firm believer that the two most important things for success in team sports is creating an environment where athletes put the interests of the team ahead of their own and develop a culture of pushing each other in training, with hard work and commitment valued over individual greatness or success. It was amazing to see our year 11 boys, between their training sessions, working together and helping each other with their studies, applying the same principles that we speak about when talking about training successfully on a track or in the field. On Saturday, we had our first GPS lead-up carnival and Scots was in early season fine form, with a Read more...

One of the things that I love about working in school sport is the change of seasons. Hanging on my kitchen wall is the Thoreau quote, “Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each,” and after an intense focus on our winter sport, I’m always reminded of it’s wisdom as I come in on the Monday morning following the last round of a season to see the Directors, Coordinators and Coaches of the upcoming sport season, who have spent their off season setting goals and planning, ready and excited to get stuck in for the season ahead, leaving myself and the boys of the College with only the opportunity to instantly refocus and begin living in the new season. What is the purpose of High School sport? I often hear this topic being discussed and from many different positions. If you go back to Thomas Arnold’s original reason for introducing sport into the curriculum at Rugby school, the purpose was to use sport as a vehicle to build the moral character of the boys under his supervision. A lot has changed since Arnold’s time. Often schools like Scots are accused of leading the way in the over-professionalism of school sport and championing a “win at all costs culture.” Read more...

Over the holiday I had the opportunity to read the book Resilience, by Eric Greitens. One of my favourite chapters in the book was titled, Responsibility. Greiten states that one of the best predictors of a person’s resilience, happiness and potential success, is the degree to which they take responsibility for all areas of their lives. In a series of studies that he conducted, he would determine the degree to which someone was taking responsibility for their own actions by how often they used “I” versus “they”, in conversations. What he determined was that the more often a person used the word “they” in conversation, the less likely they were to be taking responsibility for their own actions. He concluded, using a number of measurements, that those who frequently used “I” in conversation were happier and more likely to be successful. Read more...

The idea of 10,000, popularised by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers, has become a norm about how we think about training to become an elite athlete. For anyone who is not familiar with the concept, what Gladwell said was: that to become an elite performer in any field required a minimum of 10,000 hours of training. Matthew Syed, in his book Bounce, takes the concept one step forward, adding that the 10,000 hours needs to be very specific and goal-directed. Further, these concepts have been discussed recently in some of the most popular books, from Dweck’s Growth Mindset to Duckworth’s GRIT, that are having an influence on the way we think about education. Last week, in the process of marking year 12 Science papers, I got derailed by an article in the copy of New Scientist sitting on staffroom table. The scientist argued that there exists higher level and basic level instincts and that the instinct that drives us together falls within the higher level category, whereas the instinct that drives us apart fits within the lower. The Oxford dictionary defines character as "the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual." It seems quite a simple definition for a term that we use often when talking about athletes. Norway, a country with a population of just 5 million people broke the record for the most medals by a single nation ever - easily winning the medal tally at the recent Winter Olympics. To put this in perspective, the country has only 6 percent the population size of second place Germany, 13 percent of third place Canada and just 1.5 percent that of fourth place United States. Each Saturday I have the opportunity to travel to a number of different venues across Sydney to watch our boys compete. It’s obvious within an instant of arriving at a venue, whether or not a team is confident or rattled under pressure. On one side, you have the argument that the values learned through the experience of sport – character, discipline, working in teams, increased fitness and wellbeing, etc… carry over to all areas of a boys life and better equip them to succeed elsewhere. On the other side of the argument, one might say that sport takes away precious and valuable study time and therefore has a negative impact. Read more...

I’ve always been a great believer that the value of competitive sport in schools is that it teaches students life lessons that couldn’t be created elsewhere. Our current system of sport in schools, dates all the way back to the 1800’s and is often credited to Thomas Arnold. Arnold, as headmaster of Rugby school introduced “games” and interschool competitions as a way of building athleticism and teaching moral integrity. He believed, that boys needed what he called “Spartan” conditions, which were created through rigorous training programs and tough competition to develop into strong men. Interestingly enough, it was a visit by Pierre de Coubertin to Rugby school that motivated de Coubertin to revive the modern Olympics to spread the same character develop through sport to the rest of the world. and develop the Olympic ideals. Over the first two weeks of this term I have written about the importance of competitive sport in high school and the importance of sport in general for the development of boys. All cultures throughout history, have rights of passage and celebration for the journey of a boy becoming a man. The common thread with all of these is that they involve a process of a boy moving from being reliant on others and focused on themselves to being self-reliant and focused on their community. Scots seeks to cultivate a body of graduates who are well-rounded, successful men of faith and independent mind who influence their nation for the greater good and who strive to be worthy of their forefathers. At Scots, Sport is compulsory for every boy with the expectation that they take part in one winter sport, one summer sport and College Athletics and Swimming if selected. Boys are expected to make a long term commitment to their chosen sport by selecting their senior sport choice at the end of year 9 and then committing to that sport for the remainder of their time at the College. There has been a lot of research in recent years given to the importance of long-term commitment to focused training. 10,000 hours of training popularised by Malcolm Gladwell in his book “Outliers” - refined to 10,000 hours of specific training by Mark Syed in his book “Bounce,” has led to countless NY Times bestsellers about the attributes required to commit to long term excellence. Winston Churchill said: “Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the guilty which guarantees all the others.” In other words, you can possess countless good qualities or virtues as an individual, but without the courage to take action, you will never see those qualities become reality. It takes courage to put yourself on the line, to test yourself – to see how far you can take it. For the most part boys do not attempt things because they fear the potential consequences. It is often easier to stand in the shadows and talk about what you potentially could be than to put in a full effort – showing the full courage to find out where your real potential lies. What boys need to realise is that the worst consequence comes in not attempting to do the things that you can – never realising your potential. Read more...

When we think about success, we often imagine the achievement of the long-term goal. I often make a habit of asking students what their goals in sport are. More often than not the response that I get is something along the lines of: “I want to play for the 1st XV, then I want to make the New South Wales side, then I want to play for the Wallabies,“ or ”I want to represent the College in the Open 100m race at GPS, then I want to make the Commonwealth Games team, then I want to run at the Olympics.” Don’t get me wrong – and I much prefer this to the other answer of “I don’t know” – but when I follow with the simple question of: “How are you going to achieve that?” I am often met with a blank stare or the answer in the form of a question – “hard work?” Read more...

Often in sport we hear of an athlete described as either ‘gifted’ or ‘talented’. I’ve never been comfortable with this description of athletes. I would never argue that there are some individuals who are better suited for certain sports or who have natural abilities that when combined with a number of other factors may lead them to success. What I would argue is that often what we are describing as ‘gifted’ or ‘talented’ is actually being used to describe an athlete who has made a long-term and goal-focused commitment to training to their chosen sport. THE BACKPAGE Term 1 Week 8

The most often question that I am asked is: “Why is it important for every boy to play sport?” There is a simple answer to this. Aside from the obvious physical and health benefits, sport is one of the areas in a school where we have the opportunity to teach boys to set challenging goals and realise through commitment that they are in control of their environment. A friend recently gave me the book “The Boys in the Boat” claiming that it is an essential read for anyone involved in sport. The book is the story of The University of Washington’s 1936 first VIII crew and their quest to represent the United States at the Olympics in a time when entire university crews were chosen to represent their country. It is an exceptional story of how a group of underdogs managed to take on more elite crews from around the world, managing to defeat an impressive German crew in the process of winning the gold medal in Berlin. The story is told through the eyes of Joe Rantz, a teenager who recounts the philosophies of their coach. One of the great things about sport is that the team that with the best players doesn’t always win. Legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach won 7 NBA titles without ever having a scorer within the top 10 of the league. As part of his philosophy he popularised the concept of the “role player” and the “sixth” man and would famously say to his teams “Individual honours are nice, but no Celtic will ever go out of his way to achieve them.” One of the great lessons that can be taken from sport is the value and importance of teams. Sport can be used as a model to teach boys that the meshing of efforts into a team format puts the pieces of the puzzle together to create an environment of success. They learn how the importance of the team supersedes the recognition of individual accomplishments and that by working together as part of a group with a common goal, things can be accomplished that otherwise would not be possible. What Sport Can Teach Your Kids About Life

It was Aristotle who said, “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Sport has the power to be transformative in a child’s life. Psychologists Salvatore Maddi and Suzanne Kobasa coined the term ‘psychological hardiness’. Their research affirmed that individuals, who have a strong sense of commitment to a task, saw that they had control over their environment and outcomes and saw any obstacles as a challenge were most likely to succeed. Live results on Saturday @ScotsSportLive News, Fixtures, Teams and Results visit sports.tsc.nsw.edu.au Our captain of Football, Aref Taleb spoke brilliantly at assembly last week about what it means to play as part of a team, describing how the team has developed into a unit where 11 players unselfishly play as one. This reminds me of a quote from the 1857 novel Tom Brown's School Days where following a cricket victory Tom says 'I'll tell you what I think, it's because we've more reliance on one another, more of a house feeling, more fellowship than the school can have. Each of us knows and can depend on his next hand man better - that's why we beat em today'. Read more...

On Saturday evening I had the opportunity to attend the Football support group cocktail evening where I spoke to a number of parents. One parent shared a great story with me about his son who had moved from the D's to the C's this year, with the ultimate goal of playing for our 13a's next year. What he described was a great story of a son coming to his dad with a goal, the two of them sitting down together to develop a plan, discussing obstacles that will be faced on the journey and then using sport as a learning opportunity to talk to his son about work ethic and commitment. Sport in this context can be transformative in a boy's life. Committing to a goal, taking control of one's environment Read more...

A huge thank you to the Rugby Support Group for hosting our Annual Rugby Luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel last Friday. It was a huge success and we thank all those who attended. From conversations with parents and coaches at Sport last Saturday, they each took away something valuable from Alan Jones’ interview with Wallabies Coach, Michael Cheika. Cheika’s advice to parents was ‘at every age and level of sport the goal should be to avoid focusing on winning but rather focus on ‘excellence’ in the process and ultimately the results will take care of themselves’. At Scots we focus on ‘excellence’. Our vision is to provide the best learning pathways in Sport, enabling our boys to focus on their process of achieving their goals. Read more...

Winston Churchill once said "Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential." I have always been against students being described as "talent" as often what is being described is not talent at all but the results of a strong work ethic. Those boys who are willing to apply themselves with physical and mental "GRIT" over a long period of time are often the ones who see the most success. It is not a coincidence that when Brian Smith recently called the members of our first XV to the stage that I was able to identify some of our strongest academic students in the group. The same type of "GRIT" that determines success on a playing field can ultimately be applied to nearly anything in a boys life. Read more...

PLAYER IN FOCUS

I have always had a cheerful disposition. Known to many as Cheeky Charlie, Chuckles, Chucky, I laugh readily and tend to find fun around every corner. However, there was a time in my life when it was pretty hard to be positive. Close to 7 years ago I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. It came as a shock as I was still playing a lot of sport and generally feeling well. Overnight, I went from running up and down on a soccer field to lying in a hospital bed connected to machines. Family, friends and amazing doctors rallied together and planned an attack on my disease. During Read more...

I took the opportunity to watch the film "Eddie the Eagle" following sport on Saturday. Although the movie takes many liberties with history, it is a heart-warming take on the British ski-jumper Eddie Edwards' struggle to gain selection and compete at the 1988 winter Olympics in Calgary. The film quotes Baron de Coubertin's foundational ethos for his modern Olympics, "The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle." If there is any historical truth to the story, what can be learned is the power of having a goal, realising that you are in control of your environment and seeing everything on the path as a challenge. The program is a revolutionary system designed to help boys unlock their unique potential and create a better version of themselves. It is grounded in science, with a strong educational focus and is linked to the holistic development of our boys. At the core of the program is the development of character, growth mindset and excellence. How does it work? Our boys are tracked on their performance in strength, power, flexibility, speed, endurance, and GRIT. From the results of this tracking, each boy is given his own MBH profile. Boys are tracked four times throughout the year and given feedback on which areas they are improving and which areas need improvement. Read more...

This season saw many of our young players take to the court and experience the team culture now an instrumental component of the Scots Tennis framework. Through the entire AAGPS 14 round competition (7 trial rounds and 7 main rounds) Scots Tennis remained undefeated against all schools. Throughout the season, Scots played 280 matches, with 180 wins, 51 losses and 29 draws at an overall winning average of 78.37%. Our juniors sides have again been outstanding, starting the season with a successful tour of Tamworth and took this form into the season proper. Our under 15's continued to be a strong side both before and after Glengary. Our under 14's as a group won over 75% of their matches and our new year 7's have made a successful transition from prep to senior school cricket. This season, we put out more senior cricket teams than at any other stage in the past 5 seasons. Fielding 1st through to 5ths and 2 under 16's team shows how strong cricket at Scots College has become. Silken Laumann is the most famous rower in Canadian history. Two months prior to the start of the 1992 summer Olympics she was involved in a crash with another boat that tore her quadriceps muscle from her leg. As clear favourite to win the gold medal in single skulls she made a heroic decision to postpone surgery and compete at the Olympics using just one leg. Silken won the bronze medal at that Olympics and then, following five surgeries and two years off the sport she went on to win the silver at the 1996 games. The lead up to the Head of the River (HOR) for Scots Rowing was anything but smooth. The team crashed a boat in New Zealand and dealt with constant team changes due to sickness and injury. Woollahra Sailing Club renowned for nurturing top talent including a strong record of Olympians

FUTURE STAR IN the early days of his young sailing career, John Cooley admits he very nearly gave it all away. As a 10-year-old he watched other kids who had developed into promising sailors and thought there was no way he could peg them back and reach their level. But after some encouragement from family and teachers at Scots College John stayed the course and now finds himself eyeing a chance to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympics. To mark his steady rise John, 16, has been named the Wentworth Courier’s 2015 Junior Sports Star. He earned the nomination after a series of big performances on the world stage alongside crewmate Simon Hoffman, including second place at the Australian 29er Nationals, second at the European Cup and sixth at the World Youth Championships. Proving it was no fluke he won the national youth and Australian championships in January, making him a leading candidate for a spot on the team heading to Oman for the world championships later this year. The Scots College exists to inspire boys to learn, lead and serve as they strive for "excellence" together. One of my favourite debates in Sport is the difference between "excellence" and "winning". We can all think of examples, like Lance Armstrong for example, where someone has won but we can hardly define them or their performance as excellent. Aristotle said "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." I tend to agree with this viewpoint of excellence, winning is more about our repeated daily habits than just the total points on the board on the weekend.    At Scots, Sport is an integrated learning pathway.
